It’s National Poetry Day

so here is some of our heritage in poetry…

And now I want to share some of my favorite Poets with you

Sierra Demulder

You, whose voice is someone’s favourite voice,

Someone’s favourite face to wake up to,

Nothing would be the same if you did not exist.
– today means amen

“I use poetry to help me work through what I don’t understand, but I show up to each new poem with a backpack full of everywhere else that I’ve been.” -Sarah Kay

Everyone needs a place. It shouldn’t be inside of someone else. -Richard S

“Being loved is not the same thing as loving.
When you fall in love, it is discovering the ocean

after years of puddle jumping. It is realizing you have hands.
It is reaching for the tightrope when the crowds have all gone home.

It is hard to stop loving the ocean. Even after it has left you gasping, salty.”

“Let them see what a woman looks like. They may not have ever seen one before.”

“You are a woman. Skin and bones. Veins and nerves. Hair and sweat.
You are not made of metaphors. Not apologies. Not excuses.”

– The Type

“because there’s nothing more beautiful than the way the ocean refuses to stop kissing the shoreline no matter how many times it is sent away.”

“And when they finally hand you a heartache,
when they slip war and hatred under your door and offer you handouts on street corners
of cynicism and defeat, you tell them that
they

really ought to meet your mother.”

– if I should have a daughter
