2020 #33

She ashed her cigarette

This isn’t what she came here for

The large cities have had their COVID

She’s a travel nurse

She’s seen the war zone

Only to come home

To denial and disbelief

Now it’s catching up

It’s home

Every night more people die alone

in these hospitals

She has the eyes of a veteran

PTSD

She knows what’s coming

Take your vacation

Take your beach

Storm it like D-Day

For your pleasure

When the tide goes out

You’ll see the shadows of blood

Yours

Ours

We’re too late

May God have mercy on our selfish denial ….
